2016 Year End Reflection. Hello, 2017!

I happened to stumble upon a short poem the other day when the first half of its passage caught my eye. It went: “All the months go past, each is like a guest. December is the last, December is the best.”

Wasn’t it just yesterday when we were welcoming 2016? And now it’s already time for a year end reflection in just a blink of an eye!

Your year end reflection is important because you’ll…

1. Realize that reflections are important for the learning process.

The reason agile coaches, if you have any, are constantly running retrospectives with teams is to help them reflect on what can be done better. One way to do that is to identify three elements that will help teams achieve their full potential by asking–KEEP, STOP, START.

These reflections help us figure out:

  • KEEP: What should we keep doing? What went well and what contributed to achieving our goals?
  • STOP: What should we stop doing? What was a waste of time and did not bring results?
  • START: What can we start doing for better results?

Through reflections, we learn and grow.

2. Get a clearer picture of upcoming trends and waves to ride on

Trends within the industries are constantly changing and evolving. So must we. Earlier this year, we identified 6 project management trends to put on the radar.

For example:

Going agile was a big thing in 2016 and gradually making its way into enterprises. Despite its long existence, some teams are still struggling with the adoption of an agile mindset.

As to which wave to ride in 2017, it all depends on how you’ve fared thus far.

3. Be able to set a direction for your teams

Agile guru, Nicholas Muldoon, once said that “Without strong teams, nothing else matters” (read more about it in our latest e-book).

A proper year end reflection not only helps you identify how far you’ve come. It also allows you to identify the strengths of your teams and the tools needed to better plan, budget, and track.

Reflections show you exactly where you are and where you need to go…

So, a few of your projects may have gone beyond your estimation and far off from your prediction.

This can be easily fixed.

All you need is a shift in mindset and the right tools!

Tools, such as JIRA and Tempo, are there to help teams plan and track projects to deliver them on time and within budget. They support project managers and team leads to manage projects efficiently and management to get an overview of how things are going throughout the organization.

How does Tempo help?

Tempo’s solutions are designed so that you can easily identify trends and plan future projects with easy-to-understand and accurate data.

The million dollar question:

How have your projects fared in 2016?

Here are some further questions to ponder upon:

  • How many of your projects and releases ended as planned?
  • How many  were within budget?
  • How many of them went beyond your estimation?
  • Do you know how much time certain initiatives cost your organization?
  • Were your predictions of time and cost utilization accurate?
  • How much time did you spend on different types of work initiatives?
  • How did your estimates compare to the actual time spent on projects or releases?
  • Were you able to adapt to changes as quickly as you would have liked?

With proper planning and the right tools comes cost and time saving. What’s not to love?
