TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR ORGANIZATION

I’m a Project Manager and Systems Analyst for the University of Minnesota. I have primary development responsibility for the Medical School and School of Public Health. We operate in the higher education industry. My office is called Academic Health Center (Medical School, Schools of Nursing, Dentistry and Public Health, Colleges of Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine).

We offer application development services for collegiate and administrative units within the Academic Health Center at the University of Minnesota. Products range from student systems to research applications and everything in between.

There are around 20,000 employees at the university, but my office has a total of 60-80 employees, with 20 developers using JIRA.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER TEMPO TIMESHEETS?

We were using JIRA, and I found Tempo Timesheets when looking for a plugin to track time spent on issues.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN USING TEMPO TIMESHEETS?

Almost one year.

WERE YOU PREVIOUSLY USING ANY OTHER TOOLS FOR TIME TRACKING, RESOURCE PLANNING, AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT? IF SO, WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO MAKE THE SWITCH TO TEMPO?

Yes, but we settled on Tempo Timesheets because it has the best integration with JIRA.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE HOW YOUR ORGANIZATION USES TEMPO TIMESHEETS? WHAT PROBLEM(S) DOES IT SOLVE FOR YOU?

We track time by developer and then roll up to report actual time spent by project and/or client (collegiate unit).  We bill out monthly and use Tempo to determine hours and percentages spent on each client.

WHAT MAIN PURPOSE(S) WOULD YOU SAY TEMPO SERVES FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION?

Right now, time tracking, but we’d love to use Tempo Timesheets for project management and resource planning.  To do this, we’d need some additional functionality like the ability to plan based on original estimates and reporting similar to Gantt-charts [ed. note: this functionality is coming to Tempo Planner].

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHANGE IN YOUR ORGANIZATION SINCE YOU’VE STARTED USING TEMPO TIMESHEETS?

We didn’t track time prior to using Tempo, so we’ve had a major culture change.  Using Tempo has allowed us to be more productive and make much more informed decisions on resource allocation.

HOW WOULD YOU SAY YOUR EMPLOYEES ARE FEELING ABOUT USING TEMPO TIMESHEETS?

The tracking of time is a huge culture shift for us and not everyone is on board yet.  We have a small team that is using it and showcasing what we are able to report to our clients.  Through this, we are able to advertise the benefits of time tracking.  Slowly, other teams are getting on board.  Those who use it love it.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL ANOTHER COMPANY ASKING ABOUT TEMPO TIMESHEETS?

I highly recommend Tempo Timesheets for anyone using JIRA.  It’s such a quick thing to add your time spent as you close an issue, and the benefits are innumerable.
